Third stakeholder meeting of the TRivers project
The LIFE + TRivers project aims to create new tools to improve the management of temporary rivers based on the objectives of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The third stakeholders meeting of TRivers will be held in Zaragoza from January 25 to 26 and is addressed to stakeholders and experts involved in temporary river management. Previous meetings were held in Valencia and Murcia in 2015 and 2016.
The main aim of the meeting is for participants to use the latest version of TREHS (Temporary Rivers' Ecological and Hydrological Status) software and to solve doubts about the software. TREHS enables to know the evolution of river hydrological characteristics over time, and thus determine the probability that a river was dry in a determined period. The programme uses observed data, predictive models and, as an alternative, surveys conducted among local population or aerial photographs. Moreover, it contributes to determine if water abstraction is due to natural changes or human intervention. This issue will be addressed during the workshop on 26.
On January 25 there is a field trip to temporary rivers of the Ebro basin to know at first hand these ecosystems and analyze the problem of assessing their ecological and hydrological state. The practical part of the meeting will be held on 26, focusing on the use of TREHS software to analyze the hydrological status of different rivers in the Ebro Basin as case studies.
